ALE completed the stowage of a reactor, weighing 768t and a gasifier, weighing 709t, for the Talara Refinery Expansion Project, by Self Propelled Modular Transporters, SPMT. They were relocated in the ship’s hold to allow other heavy refinery equipment to be positioned inside.

As the ship’s cranes did not have the capacity to lift the pieces onto the grillage supports, ALE relocated the two pieces by loading the pieces onto 40 axle lines of SPMT and transporting them from ship’s centreline to their final bearings. ALE chose to utilise the same trailer arrangement for each piece so that the trailers were reassembled without wasting time reconfiguring the trailers between the two manoeuvres.

Although the distance was less than 50m, the reduced clearance inside the ship’s hold meant the operation was complex. In addition, the client needed to have the grillage positioned ready for the sea transportation before the relocation. By using the SPMTs, ALE were able to reduce the time, risks and disruptions from other simultaneous activities, optimising the total duration of the ship in port. The two heavy loads are part of five items destined for the Talara refinery in Peru.
